Pursuing mastery in a martial art yields endless benefits for the practitioner. Many of which go unseen to the untrained eye or even the beneficiaries themselves as often our most meaningful gains are the hardest to quantify. This is not the case, however, with the acquisition of confidence. If you practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you will become more confident. I do not know much, but I know this. Cultivating the technical ability to subdue an assailant, and more importantly the ability to avoid such a situation all together, changes the lens in which we view the world. The safer we feel in day to day life, the more beautiful our experiences become.
Confidence is an equal-opportunity virtue. Whether the student is 4 or 64, confidence does not reserve itself for a select few. It is a possibility for all of us, and I believe it is our inherent right. Too many of us, whether from the voice in our heads or the voices in our environment, struggle with identity and confidence. We constantly feel that we are not good enough, or not deserving of a better quality of life, and our outer worlds tend to reflect this thought paradigm.
So much of our lack of confidence comes not from what we know about ourselves, but what we do not know. We tend to fear that which we do not understand, and that fear is in essence a simultaneous lack of confidence for one’s own ability. This is ever-apparent in the most primal of matters in the realm of physical conflict. Training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a means of simulated combat, in a safe and growth-focus environment. This atmosphere yields all of the growth that such conflict produces without the accompanying danger.
To learn that we are not made of glass.
To learn that we can face grave adversity, and overcome it.
To push ourselves to the brink of physical exhaustion, and come out a different version of ourselves on the other side.
To face another’s aggression with equanimity, and learn to navigate adversity in the most efficient way.
This is what training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives us.
Jiu Jitsu is a tool which helps us navigate the trials and tribulations of daily life. Jiu Jitsu teaches us to calmly react to the hardships of life in the most productive way, and it is the countless lessons on the mat that transcend into our successes off of it. Whether a young child, a college student, or a parent, the confidence we acquire through our practice of Jiu Jitsu will make us a better version of whatever it is we already are.
This is an endeavor worthy of our time, and I am thankful it is one we have undertaken together.
